About Kernie
Design, in one form or another, has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember… in fact, I probably owe most of what I do today to Scooby-Doo. As a child, I would watch reruns of the original "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" series and attempt to draw my favorite characters. As the years passed, I left Scooby behind and moved onto Thundercats, Batman, and X-Men. In middle school, I drew my own comic books, and in high school I moved onto computer-aided design, animation, and video production. I saw most of my senior year at Northern Lehigh High School through the lens of a camcorder, compiling footage for a highlight film to be shown at our Senior Farewell. While filming one day, a friend affectionately referred to my camera as the "Kernie Cam," and the name stuck.
After receiving a favorable reaction to my highlight video (and a few short films along the way), my friends and I decided to try our hand at a full-length feature, Kernie Cam: Total Darkness. While the project is currently (and indefinitely) stalled, it was an incredible way to hone my skills, especially within Adobe After Effects, a wonderful motion graphics application. During my college years, I also returned to Northern Lehigh to create two more senior highlight films for the classes of 2002 and 2003.
Since then, I have filled my time by creating wedding videos, commemorative films, and my own personal projects. I view every project as a new challenge and a new opportunity to broaden my range and skills as an artist. The blessing (and occasional curse) of being a designer is that it is not something you do, but something you are. I'm always brainstorming, always trying to push the envelope, and it's surprising when or where a new idea will spring. Whether I'm driving in my car or taking a shower, inspiration for design is everywhere.
Bottom line is… I love design. It inspires me, it frustrates me, it delights me, it exhausts me, it encourages me, and most importantly, it defines me. I can't imagine my life without it. While I don't know what projects lay ahead of me, I'm excited for new challenges and I can't wait to see what I'll think of next!
